In my second required course for my Master's degree this summer, Education Technology, I am to work with a classmate on a wiki about podcasting. This class should really be called Web 2.0 because that is what we are learning about how to do all these things so we can use them in education. We would like to set up links on our wiki about educational podcasts. I've found lots of teacher blogs where teacher's make links to student's blogcasts about books they've read or things to see in their town. These are useful in that it gives students a new and fun product to make, but really it seems you could do the same thing by having students tape record themselves reading their book report. I guess this way it is just easier to have parents listen. I was hoping that some educators have found ways to use podcasts to present information for students to learn, say a podcast about tectonic plates for science or podcast to teach students about cultural innovations of the Maya empire. We will probably also have to create a podcast of our own as part of this. I do have a blog as part of this class now too. What kind of microphone do I need to make my own blogcasts? I know there are free sites for educators where I can upload or download my blogcasts but I just need to know if I have all the hardware I need. *The term blogcast has been reprinted with permission from Jim R Tobe Esq. You're absolutely right Luda. Blogcast makes total sense. As a combination of the words <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blogcast" rel="nofollow">blog and podcast</a> that is. Since the term has been used since 2001 it's quite established. Unfortunately this doesn't bode well for Jim's trademark. :-P I’m sorry. You’re absolutely right Luda. Blogcast makes total sense. You see Jim, that's how much I care...venturing out into the harsh world of blogcastâ„¢ commenting just to support you. First of all, I second the objective and unbiased parents in their praise of the intro and outro songs. It's always one of my favorite parts and I can tell you put a lot of time into this one. Second, and most important, I would like to publicly state my dedication to the new term blogcastingâ„¢. It is right for a few reasons, which I will now list: 1.) It actually makes sense! You see, you have this thing, this...blog. And you are using it it share audio recordings with the general public. You, like any person in media or radio, might refer to that as a "broadcast". So bear with me now as I make a big leap of faith. Let's just suppose you took those two things you are doing and, oh I don't know, combined them? You might stumble upon the term "broadlog", which is stupid. But maybe if you persevered and tried again, you would arrive at "blogcast"â„¢. See how natural that is? Say it with me again: blogcastâ„¢. Ah, isn't that accurate and descriptive? Good, glad we agree. 2.) Now for the second point, let's consider the current alternative..."podcasting". Supposedly, this came about because people were putting these recordings on their iPods. Well okay...I guess people did that. Except that it doesn't make sense because the iPod doesn't broadcast the recording, the blog author does. Also, people listen to these things in many different ways. I for example, just play them on my computer. One of the five Zune owners probably uses their device in a similar way. I've heard Nacho Queso, your Arizona fan, and his friends use a combination of clicking sounds and drumming to re-create your blogcastsâ„¢ since they can't afford a computer. So I don't see why Apple should have a monopoly on this word that doesn't even make sense. As time went on, people stopped saying Xerox in favor of the more accurate photocopy. I believe that with Jim's, help we can achieve the same good for the blog community. 3.) Seeing as how Jim has the term trademarked, we stand to make a lot of money from the word if it takes off. 4.) It's fun to prove John wrong from time to time :) I hope we can all look back at this entry 20 years from now and laugh...at how stupid blogging was now that we have telepathy chips embedded in our brains.
